Analytical Writer/Journalist

1. Background
The Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung (RLS) is a German political foundation affiliated with the German party "Die Linke" (the Left party). RLS is dedicated to political education and progressive social research. The RLS Regional Office in Beirut, established in May 2017, primarily supports projects in Lebanon and Iraq and engages with the critical Syrian diaspora in Germany. Additionally, RLS publishes reports on developments in Iran.

2. Scope of Work
Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung (RLS) seeks to contract eight freelance journalists to produce one article every 1.5–2 months, in addition to other knowledge-based content, over a period of one year. The selected journalists will focus on political, social, and economic developments in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Iran, with particular attention to the following themes:

  • Migration and refugees
  • Intersectional feminism
  • Food sovereignty
  • Social movements
  • Gender justice
  • Leftist organizing
  • Analysis of regional politics and trends in West Asia, focusing on Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Iran
  • Transnational justice

The RLS adopts a leftist, critical, and intersectional approach. The selected writers will collaborate closely with the RLS team to produce accessible analyses and critiques in straightforward language. These contributions aim to enhance political awareness and provide knowledge for informed decision-making and political engagement in the region, with additional content targeting a broader German audience. The objective is to analyze local, national, and regional developments within the specified countries and produce timely analyses of emerging trends.

Articles will be published on the RLS Beirut Website and may be translated into German.

3. Requirements

  • Demonstrated understanding of one or more of the specified countries.
  • Strong writing and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in analytical and critical thinking.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Syrian conflict and refugee-related issues.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • Degree in Political Science, International Affairs, Human Rights, Migration Studies, , Public Policy, Journalism, Development Studies, Law, or related fields.
  • Professional experience in qualitative and quantitative research, analytical writing, and conducting interviews is desirable.
  • Experience working on sensitive topics, particularly within the German context, is desirable.
  • Excellent English Writing Skills.
  • Proficiency in German (preferred): Knowledge of German is a plus, though not required.
  • Alignment with the overall goals of RLS and leftist ideologies.

4. Deliverables

The journalist is required to submit the following:

  • CV and cover letter demonstrating relevant experience and capabilities.
  • One or two written examples of previous work related to one of the specified topics (It can be published or unpublished)

Application Submissions Guideline:

Proposals will be evaluated in accordance with RLS regulations and criteria. Proposals will be scored based on the following criteria:

  • Experience and Knowledge (30%)
  • Written examples (40%)
  • Leftist Affiliation (30%)

Payment

Based on the RLS scale, compensation ranges from 150 to 300 EUR, depending on the type of article.
