Prime Minister Hassan Diab Declares the Resignation of His Cabinet Following Anger over the Beirut Port Explosion
Lebanon’s Prime Minister Hassan Diab stepped down from his job on Monday August 10, in the wake of the disastrous Beirut port explosion that triggered public fury, declaring that he has concluded that corruption in Lebanon is “bigger than the state”. The government’s resignation was preceded by the resignation of the minister of environment and the minister of information, as well as several members of the parliament. Diab’s government was formed after the resignation of former PM Saad al Haririr. Diab’s government failed to implement the sweeping political and economic reforms that it had promised.
